Today in History: New Mexico Admitted as 47th U.S. State

On January 06, 1912, New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state of the United States of America. Today, they are the 5th largest state by area, but the 6th least populated state by density, at only ~17 residents per square mile. The majority of its current borders were defined in the Compromise of 1850, where Texas dropped their claim in exchange for $10 million. The remainder of the state as it is defined today, the lower boot heal, was acquired by means of the Gadsden Purchase in 1853; it was purchased for construction of the Transcontinental Railroad.
